About Gates & Fencing
Most gates here are metal. Steel designs run from modern pedestrian and driveway gates with mid-century and geometric lines to laser-cut panel gates patterned with a tree of life, dragonflies, a sunrise or fish scales. Others are wrought iron, or rustic wood and iron in Tuscan and Old World courtyard styles. Woodworkers add Victorian-style wooden gates and red cedar fence panels, and some modern gates pair aluminum with ipe. For inside the house, there are pet gates and stairway gates.
What sets the price
A listing's price is usually a starting point. Half of the listings here are priced between about $1,200 and $2,050, with a median near $1,300, and one in ten is priced above $5,500. The size of the opening, one gate or a pair, the material, the amount of decorative work, the finish (powder coat, patina or galvanizing on steel) and the hinges, latches and locks all move the number.
Before you request a quote
- The rough opening: the clear width between the posts, walls or columns, and the height you want. Many listings state the opening they were built for, such as 36 by 60 inches or 72 by 72 inches.
- One gate or a pair, and which way it should swing.
- Photos of the opening from both sides, including the posts or walls it will hang from.
- Any plans for an automatic opener or a lock.
- Your delivery ZIP code, and whether you need installation.

Describe the gate with the materials, size, budget and date you have in mind, and makers who do this work send proposals. You pay a 50% deposit on the one you approve, see the finished gate by photos, video call or studio visit, and pay the balance once you approve it; Maker Marketplace holds that payment while it ships.

Steel and wrought iron are the most common here, finished with powder coat, a patina or galvanizing to protect against rust. Wood gates in cedar give a softer look, and rustic designs combine wood with iron straps and hinges. Modern designs also pair aluminum with ipe.
