Wood and weather

Woods such as teak, cedar, ipe, redwood and cypress are common outdoor choices because they stand up to weather better than many other woods, and a finish adds protection. Ask the maker which wood and finish they recommend for your climate, how much upkeep it needs, and whether to cover or store the piece in winter.

What sets the price

A listing's price is usually a starting point. Half of the listings here are priced between about $400 and $2,050, with a median near $900, and one in ten is priced above $4,500. Size, wood, the finish and the number of pieces set the price of a commission.
