This carved table is made of butternut, a member of the walnut family. Butternut is a warm wood with an interesting grain that goes well with most decors. The top is very smooth to the touch and is hand rubbed with many coats of oil to bring out the luster of the wood. You will find that visitors want to touch the surface to see if it is as soft and smooth as it looks. There is a French word 'chatoyance' that can be translated into English as 'to shine like a cat's eye'. That describes the luster of this tabletop. The carving is painstakingly done by hand. I believe that carving makes a piece of furniture really special. I can do any kind of design, but I have always liked florals. Flowers and vines have been used as themes for decorative carving since the early Egyptians. The Greeks and Romans made good use of acanthus, wheat and other leaves to decorate their furniture and their architecture. Medieval furniture utilized floral themes as well. Some periods featured realistic leaves and plants while others had highly stylized versions. If you show me a design you like, I can interpret it for you on the apron of your table either as incised or relief carving. The table shown in this picture was carved entirely with one knife. The dimensions of this table are 48" L x 18" W x 30" H, but I can make any size you like. I can add a drawer or a bottom shelf as well. There is a real satisfaction in owning something that was made especially for you by a skilled craftsman. When you compare the quality of my tables to those made in factories, you can't help but notice the difference. I hope that I can build one for you.

It is refreshing and deeply satisfying to purchase something that is made by a craftsman especially for you. A piece of furniture that can be passed down from one generation to another is special. Jim Reedy Custom Woodworking is a one-person shop that makes beautiful furniture in a variety of styles. I use only fine quality solid wood and employ hand carving, traditional joinery and extensive use of hand tools to create my furniture. My pieces aren't inexpensive, but I have found that the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
A guide to the best items from the best makers and the stories behind them.

For Dining Room MirrorWorking with Jim was an absolute pleasure. We had him build a large mirror for our dining room and are thrilled with the results. A true professional, Jim worked with us through three iterations on the mirror molding and at least two iterations on the stain before we selected a final design. He kept us informed regarding progress from start to finish, and the final product is a testament to his expertise as a woodworker. Jim gets five stars across the board.

For parsons table, counter heightWhat a wonderful experience! I have been ordering custom items for many years and usually something is not right...........not this time! From the proposal, which was quick and priced right (and included a computer graphic) through keeping contact re: progress, up to delivery of a table which was exactly to my specifications. It was a pleasure dealing with Custom Made, and especially Jim Reedy, who reminds me of a 'Vermont craftsman and gentleman'. I have already recommended this site to friends.
Mindy
For Dining Room TableJim built a beautiful dining table for me with two leaves that seats 4-8 people. Jim was an absolute pleasure to work with. We designed the table together and Jim drove all the way from Boca to Davie on multiple occasions to meet with me to discuss the design and the finish of the table. While the table was being made, Jim provided me with regular updates on the progress. Jim is dedicated to his customer and passionate about his work. This is evident in the wonderful craftsmanship of our table. My family and I love the table and we have received many compliments from dinner guests. I have contracted with a lot of people to work on our house and I have never worked with anyone as pleasant, professional, and dedicated as Jim. I highly recommend Jim to anyone who needs an expert craftsman.
