Classic Cherry Highboy

Classic Cherry Highboy

If you are looking for an exceptional piece of furniture for your home, consider an eighteenth century-style highboy. A highboy is a classic that can be handed down from one generation to another. It is a large piece of furniture that will make a major statement in any room. This highboy is based on one made in about 1750 in Philadelphia. The lower case is constructed with mortise and tenon joinery while the top case is hand-dovetailed together for exceptional strength. Including the drawers, there are 240 hand-cut dovetails in this piece. The highboy has 11 drawers plus two hidden compartments. This piece was made from solid cherry with poplar as the secondary wood, but it can be made in mahogany or walnut instead if you prefer. The bonnet top and flame finials are design features often found in this type of piece. The finials were turned on a lathe and then hand carved. The decorative shells on the center drawers were hand carved as well. The cabriole legs and pad feet were shaped by hand. The hardware is an authentic reproduction of hardware from that period. The finish is shellac.

  • Great service

This Maker has consistently demonstrated excellence in craftsmanship and customer service.

It is refreshing and deeply satisfying to purchase something that is made by a craftsman especially for you. A piece of furniture that can be passed down from one generation to another is special. Jim Reedy Custom Woodworking is a one-person shop that makes beautiful furniture in a variety of styles. I use only fine quality solid wood and employ hand carving, traditional joinery and extensive use of hand tools to create my furniture. My pieces aren't inexpensive, but I have found that the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

Working with Jim was an absolute pleasure. We had him build a large mirror for our dining room and are thrilled with the results. A true professional, Jim worked with us through three iterations on the mirror molding and at least two iterations on the stain before we selected a final design. He kept us informed regarding progress from start to finish, and the final product is a testament to his expertise as a woodworker. Jim gets five stars across the board.
