Serpentine Card Table

The form of the serpentine card table, dating from 1800, has always fascinated me, and is the choice for this interpretation of a classic design. While there are many examples of these tables in museums, these elements would never have come together in a single antique piece. The serpentine curves are unique to this piece, as is the cross-banded Crotch Birch ellipse on the softly undulating front apron. Crotch Birch (used occasionally by the Seymours, a family of famous Boston furniture makers in the 1800's thru 1820's) is not commercially available – these pieces come from birch trees I cut in New Hampshire which are then sawn into veneer, scraped and polished to reveal its inner beauty. The stringing of holly and ebony around the ellipse provides the border to set the crotch birch off from its field. The two different types of holly/ebony banding are hand made to set off the shimmering angular patterns in the Fiddleback Makore, an African hardwood. This design is available as a Side Table or as a Card Table (with a hinged top and a wing out rear leg).

I work by commission, focusing on fine furniture forms from any era, from reproduction work,(like the exact reproduction of the Eliphalet Chapin desk in the Garvan Collection at Yale) to elaborate original designs.

Richard Oedel of Fort Point Cabinetmakers was so helpful, professional, and creative throughout our design process of making a dining room table. Very professional drawings were presented; friendly and timely communication over the phone, email, and in person to take measurements and see our space; through attention to details and consideration to our project restrictions, preferences, and style. Very appreciative of our positive experience -- and would highly recommend as Richard has a sincere interest in completing a project to the exact customer's preference and specifications.

From the start, Richard Oedel of Fort Point Cabinetmakers was more than helpful and insightful. Because he was making matching benches for my dining table and my table was so large, he drove 60 miles each way to see it in person, take measurements and pictures to discern the right look. Drawings were presented, a budget was agreed upon and not only was the project delivered on time, but it matched perfectly and the quality was unsurpassed. I could not say enough good things about Fort Point Cabinetmakers as to their skill, quality of work, professionalism and sincere interest in completing a project to the exact customer specifications.
