Sometimes simpler is better. This design was an exercise in paring down, a deliberate attempt to remove everything unnecessary in order to celebrate the basic form of a bed. Because the Shakers approached their furniture from the same angle, I have named this bed after them. Like them, I believe that simple forms contribute to an inner life of peace and clarity. They hoped that the spare and orderly environments they created would liberate them toward a rich life with their God. No matter your theology, there is great wisdom in keeping your surroundings simple and elegant for the health of your soul. But in spite of its simplicity, this bed has a striking presence. Its headboard panel is made of luminescent curly maple (which is normally employed for the backs of violins). And its pins are faceted from black ebony and polished to clean perfection.
