Rustic Claro-Walnut Slab Coffee Table

This client wanted a large, dramatic coffee table as a center piece for their great-room. They were on a budget with both time and money, so we looked through my inventory, which saved shopping time and guaranteed the slab was dry and ready for fabrication (many slabs are not acclimatized to Colorado). We found an incredible piece of Claro Walnut with gorgeous figure that was just the right size. They especially liked the idea of a contrasting wood from local forests for the legs. The simple design suited their needs and kept the cost down. This 1¾" thick Claro Walnut slab was cut from where the tree makes its two main branches off of the trunk, or the crotch of the tree. This area is loaded with figure and visual depth. The two long edges were left natural and a little bark remains in the crotch. The legs are blue-stain or bettle-kill Pine, which is a product from the trees right here in Eagle County. The legs are tapered and attached to the top with a traditional through-mortise-and-tenon joint.
