Another hollow turning made from Masur Birch also called Alpine Burl or Karelian Burl after the Finnish province of Karelia where it is often found. Masur birch is produced from wood attacked by the larvae of the Agromyzia Carbonara beetle. The high figured small brown pith flecks found in this wood is caused when the tree heals the damage done by an invasive boring beetle. The beetle infestation leaves the trees stunted and sometimes deformed but produces wood with small twists and swirls that highlight the darker, burly figure. This wood is very rare. Woods used in this turning are Masur Birch, Amboyna Burl, Ebony, and Cocobolo. Be sure and check my web site under bowls and platters for more pictures and examples.

I'm a self taught woodworker/turner. The past few years my main focus has been in wood turning. I've sold thousands of pieces in every continent in the world, from simple dishes to elaborate hollow lidded vessels. In my work I have used many different types of domestic and exotic woods of which I have over a hundred different types in my shop.
Bryan was great. very easy to work with. He sent specs and a drawing work up of the project before he got started. I knew we were on the same page and the results exceeded my expectations. The craftsmanship he displays in his work is hard to find anymore. I will absolutely work with Bryan again in the future and I look forward to it.
Nelson was awesome! My dogs love their new bed. Nelson's communication and skills go beyond what I ever imagined. Thank you for the bed. Nelson you really are "the bees ???? knees when working with the trees"!
I am happy with the finished project. Just what I expected. I would recommend and use Custom Made again in the future. Great concept!
Beautiful unique piece, arrived even before scheduled, thank you so much, I'll be back : ) Mimi
Bryan created two beautiful bowls that exceeded my expectations! He was a pleasure to work with and I'll look forward to using them for years to come.
