Blue Pine (Beetle Killed) Table

This table is made from blue-stained pine. The wood naturally turns the blue color when the tree is attacked by pine beetles, there is no stain added. Because of the insect infestation of the tree it will most likely not survive. This condition is happening to thousands and thousands of trees along the Rocky Mountain range, creating a fire hazard. The harvesting of the dead trees helps with the long term heath of the forest and makes some really cool looking furniture as well. The top is made from 1.25" thick blue-stained pine which has a tung oil finish. The base is made from steel. The welds on the base have been ground smooth and a black patina has been applied to darken the exposed shiny metal. The base is sealed with a satin lacquer.

Objective:

The goal is to create unique furniture that is rooted in functionality, visually intriguing while displaying honesty of material and a bit of whimsy. To craft pieces that are viewed and used on multiple levels; work that melds with its surroundings while possessing the impact to stand apart. First appearances are of clean, simple objects. A closer look develops into layers of discovery about connections, tectonics, and the character of materials. Each element is continually edited throughout the process to insure every part contributes to the strength of the whole aesthetically, structurally, and conceptually.

Method:

Germinal to each design is an idea of the unique characteristics of materials, used to inspire the formation of the piece. If it is wood, steel, glass, textile or anything, the aim is to take advantage of the strengths and inherent beauty of each material. The act of construction is an ever-changing progression adapting to the challenges and opportunities inherent in manipulating raw materials into a final result.

Philosophy:

It is important to use materials in a sustainable manner. Selection of “green” products is equally important as how they are being used. Each piece of furniture is build with the idea it must stand the test of time to respect the materials from which it was formed.
