Gorgeous Figured Maple Coffee Table

$1,000

This one of a kind coffee table is made from a single slab of figured Maple hardwood. The wood has a ton of character, there is a lot of figure and movement as well as some spalting and bark inclusions. The top has been filled with epoxy so that the voids are flush with the rest of the surface. In the sun light the curly figure of the wood really pops. It's a unique piece from what was a massive tree. The wood has been finished with a durable water based finish called PolyWhey that's made from cheese making by products. The base is 1/8 plate steel that has continuous welds at the corners. The metal has the mill finish and has been sealed with a clear coat. The table is 46" long, 34" wide, and 17" tall. The top is over 2" thick.

Objective:

The goal is to create unique furniture that is rooted in functionality, visually intriguing while displaying honesty of material and a bit of whimsy. To craft pieces that are viewed and used on multiple levels; work that melds with its surroundings while possessing the impact to stand apart. First appearances are of clean, simple objects. A closer look develops into layers of discovery about connections, tectonics, and the character of materials. Each element is continually edited throughout the process to insure every part contributes to the strength of the whole aesthetically, structurally, and conceptually.

Method:

Germinal to each design is an idea of the unique characteristics of materials, used to inspire the formation of the piece. If it is wood, steel, glass, textile or anything, the aim is to take advantage of the strengths and inherent beauty of each material. The act of construction is an ever-changing progression adapting to the challenges and opportunities inherent in manipulating raw materials into a final result.

Philosophy:

It is important to use materials in a sustainable manner. Selection of “green” products is equally important as how they are being used. Each piece of furniture is build with the idea it must stand the test of time to respect the materials from which it was formed.
