Re-Purposed Window Top Coffee Table

$1,200

This coffee table is made from a salvaged metal casement window frame and wood reclaimed from a cabin outside of the Central City in the Colorado mountains. The wood has been cleaned up but still has a lot of the character that it picked up from weathering for many years. The window still has its original brass hardware that now functions as a handle to open up the table top. To open the top does take a good pull as the metal window and glass are heavy, but once it is opened most of the way it will stay in place. The table is great for storage or display, with about 10" of room between the wood base and glass top. The paint has been mostly striped from the metal window frame and then it was clear coated to protect the raw metal. The wood has been sealed with PolyWhey, a water based polyurethane made from cheese making by-products. The dimensions of the table are 50" long, 34" wide, and 18" tall. The top is made from 1/4" tempered glass for safety.

Objective:

The goal is to create unique furniture that is rooted in functionality, visually intriguing while displaying honesty of material and a bit of whimsy. To craft pieces that are viewed and used on multiple levels; work that melds with its surroundings while possessing the impact to stand apart. First appearances are of clean, simple objects. A closer look develops into layers of discovery about connections, tectonics, and the character of materials. Each element is continually edited throughout the process to insure every part contributes to the strength of the whole aesthetically, structurally, and conceptually.

Method:

Germinal to each design is an idea of the unique characteristics of materials, used to inspire the formation of the piece. If it is wood, steel, glass, textile or anything, the aim is to take advantage of the strengths and inherent beauty of each material. The act of construction is an ever-changing progression adapting to the challenges and opportunities inherent in manipulating raw materials into a final result.

Philosophy:

It is important to use materials in a sustainable manner. Selection of “green” products is equally important as how they are being used. Each piece of furniture is build with the idea it must stand the test of time to respect the materials from which it was formed.
