Mahogany Musician's Sideboard

Mahogany Musician's Sideboard

$6,000

This hand-made sideboard got its name because all the woods are also used to make musical instruments. (Don't worry, they were not instrument quality timbers!) Honduran mahogany for the case, very-old-and-not-quite-sure-which rosewood veneer decorating the top, solid rosewood for pulls, hard maple for the drawer sides and Sitka spruce for the drawer bottoms. This design appears in Lark Books "500 Cabinets" as well as on the pages of Fine Woodworking. The legs were a particular treat (and challenge) to make as the shape gently undulates over much of the length. I pay particular attention to wood movement issues during design and wood selection, as this is key to a long and happy service. The construction is first class mortise and tenon and hand cut dovetails, and most surfaces were hand planed for a surface harking back to the best antique work.

Update 2019: Unfortunately my wife is fighting lung cancer and I am not currently accepting furniture commissions.

Design that fits you to a "T", sensitive use of lovely wood, techniques that stand the test of time, touchable surfaces and layers of detail--I strive to bring these together with your needs and wishes, wrapping it all in an enjoyable process and a trail of photos.
