Cherry Writing Desk With Drawers
This writing / computer desk features reverse-tapered 'bell-bottom legs, two dovetailed drawers, and an arched front apron. Made of cherry, ebony, holly, and ebonized maple. The upward arch of the front apron allows for plenty of room for knees when sliding in a chair. The asymmetrical drawers -- deeper at the outside, shallower towards the middle -- take their cue from the curve along bottom of the apron. The aprons and drawer fronts are tapered to match the curve at the top of the legs. The exposed joinery of the hand-cut dovetailed drawers adds visual contrast.

Joseph Murphy Furniture Maker
I am an award-winning designer and maker of fine wood furniture. My furniture -- meticulously made by hand -- is inspired by my love of design that features clean lines and harmonious forms. For me, this means Shaker, Scandinavian, and mid-century modern furniture as well as traditional Japanese architecture. While informed by tradition, I do like to incorporate a novel twist on things, whenever possible.
I work primarily with domestic hardwoods such as walnut, cherry, and maple. I use imported exotic woods such as ebony and paduak for details and accents. When making custom furniture, I enjoy the collaborative process that comes from working closely with my clients to refine and improve the design at hand.
