This was the first in a series of highly decorated fireplace surrounds and screens that I made for a client. His penchant for detail gave me a chance to explore some ironwork techniques that I had always been fascinated by but hadn't yet found the opportunity to pursue. Inspiration for this cutout, chased and layered iron fireplace surround came from the work of Samuel Yellin, an early 20th century blacksmith from Philadelphia and historical French work. The fixed surround with a single panel door fire screen gives an unobstructed view of the fire yet allows full access when tending the fire. It also avoids the need for a place to set the screen while tending the fire. I also made the fireplace tools and stand.
