Floating Cherry Shelves With Cherry File Drawers
This was an interesting piece and required a bit of engineering to give the customer a "floating shelf" with no visible supports. These shelves varied in size from 12"x22" to 22"x38". Using an aluminum honeycomb core and veneering onto that with shop cut veneers, yielded a very clean look that hides all of the special requirements to support the selves without flexing. The file drawers below contain three vertical rows each of files, making this four drawer file cabinet the equivalent of a twelve drawer unit. Custom fabricated handles with and accent wood routed in give a clean look with no protruding knobs to catch. A hidden compartment was added as a bonus. I'm always researching better ways to make things, whether it's using a high tech aluminum honeycomb with high strength adhesive, or looking back to a little used traditional method that works as well or better than a new method.
