Stained Glass Over-Sink Retrofitted Kitchen Window

Before starting a kitchen remodel, the homeowner asked us to create a stained glass window to insert in an existing window over the sink. She gave us quite a bit of freedom in choosing colors with the specification that the window allow her to view outside while obscuring the view from the street. She was open to an abstract or non-objective style so we could make the most of color and line to satisfy her wishes. We selected some very special artisan-made glasses to create this window, and the glass helped inspire Mary Ann's design. Surrounding an arc of clear seedy and pale green mouthblown glass that allow the homeowner to see out while she works at the sink are amber-to-red graded and deep teal blue "stringer" hand-poured glasses, and amber reamy and pale green crackle German glasses that make indistinct the view from the outside. The "stringer" glass is textured with small, thin strips whereas the crackle glass has an alligatored texture. We have purchased glass from glass makers when they are just getting started, before they produce uniform glass in large quantities, and enjoy including now hard-to-find glass in a commission project. Jay installed the stained glass as an additional interior pane in the window, adding thermal efficiency. Our installation techniques allow for the window's removal if that is ever necessary. The mistress of the house was so happy with her new window that she immediately commissioned a second kitchen window and later asked us to make windows for her dining and living rooms.
