"The Dress"

$1,000+

Inspiration for this wall hanging came from shibori dyed silk fabrics. The center part has two to three layers of silk merging with the hand- dyed patterns. It is partly quilted with cotton batting and backing, but the center part is loose and free of sewing. I did not want to disturb the delicate dyed images of silk organza.

Textile artist

As a native of Finland, where there is a long tradition in weaving, I worked as a weaving teacher after graduating from textiles and design. In spite of traditional techniques my work has always been contemporary and I believe my work has that Scandinavian style of simplicity. I started as a weaver, but I like to work with mixed textile mediums. I create hand-woven textiles, art quilts and fabric collages for interiors.

My studio is located at Western Avenue Studios in Lowell Massachusetts. The building is a historic 20th century brick mill building that has been converted to artist lofts. Open Studios occur regularly on the first Saturday of every month from noon to 5 PM for the public to visit artists.
