Mission Style - Chest Of Drawers

$1,850

MISSION CHEST OF DRAWERS (35½h x 66w x 21d) The top is built with bread board ends, as it used to be built. The ends are glued along 1/3rd of the surface and attached with two 1/8" dowels, to allow for the natural expansion of the wood. The back of the Chest of Drawers is made from 3/8" tongue and grooved solid Cedar, unlike the commonly used Cedar Veneer plywood. Cedar is used for protection against insects and pleasant scent, but in the drawers it often stains clothing. In a feature not seen in production work for more than 80 years, we score the underside of our chest of drawers tops and table tops to prevent damage caused by expansion and contraction due to natural atmospheric changes. One of the many reasons antiques last much longer than anything that is made today. MISSION MIRROR (49¾" x 37¾") The Mission Mirror makes a beautiful addition to the already impressive chest of drawers. Its arched design gives the set an added flair that compliments the arch at the bottom of the chest. 5/4 Quartersawn Oak for our tops, Rift and Quarter Sawn for our sides, and Flat Sawn is used to expose the Quarter at the edge. All of the drawers on our Mission line are dovetailed on all four corners using an English dovetail. We also use wood on wood dovetail slides. We use Baltic Birch plywood for our drawers to alleviate bowing, checking, cracking, or warping. Hand-Made Pulls: To maintain that wonderful authentic look, our door and drawer pulls are handmade. These handmade pulls make up the majority of the metal to be found in this line. We use screws in elongated slots (which allow for expansion without damage) to hold down the tops of items like the chest of drawers. Mortise and Tenon Joinery: We use mortise and tenon joinery throughout our Mission furniture. This method was preferred for its strength.

The Barefoot Woodworker

Our furniture maker is the Barefoot Woodworker, a professional woodworker with a minor aversion to shoes. He was fortunate enough to have studied under a Master Artisan who was trained in an apprenticeship in the famous Black Forest in Germany. (Black Forest woodworkers and clock makers were renowned for their precision clocks. Cuckoo clocks have been made in the region since the early eighteenth century and much of their development occurred there. Excessive logging and two World Wars have reduced the population of the Black Forest and its renowned woodworkers to a mere fraction of what once was, making their distinguished skills both scarce and valuable.) Barefoot's education by this truly gifted Artisan has lead to a passion for the superior, and almost forgotten, construction methods of the past. He possesses an affinity for hand tools and traditional joinery that most others in this field no longer know about, let alone use. He has also developed a love and comprehensive knowledge of hidden catches and secret compartments. In an industry bombarded with new machinery designed for shortcuts, he is pursuing the Master Woodworker level via traditional methods.
