The project: a custom jewelry box to present a custom wedding ring! Turned and carved out of Musical Grade Fiddleback Maple, hand rubbed with a white pearlesence, mechanically designed and created by me, and hand painted blue (interior) with a custom made glass post to hold the ring. The Zip a Dee Do Dah music you are hearing in the beginning is the actual unaltered live sound. Custom designed and custom made! Some specifics on how it was made: I dipped into my special stash to pull out a beautiful piece of Musical Grade Fiddleback Maple. A board with this kind of figuring is a rare piece. I cut a piece off and then cut that in half to book match the two halves of the heart. Those halves were glued together and then turned first into a cylinder and then a heart on the lathe. The two halves were then separated again and the inside was carved out to allow room for the pedestal that held the ring. Then a team of varied professionals were consulted for the mechanical design inside of the base. After sanding it smooth, the outside was hand rubbed with a white pearlescent powder to really bring out but lighten the details in the wood. And finally the inside was painted a deeply vibrant blue before getting a glossy finish to protect this beautiful, one-of-a-kind piece. This was an amazing project that while it was initially quoted correctly for the woodwork.. the design and mechanical construction time and effort means this could not be created again for less than $3000.

The Barefoot Woodworker
Our furniture maker is the Barefoot Woodworker, a professional woodworker with a minor aversion to shoes. He was fortunate enough to have studied under a Master Artisan who was trained in an apprenticeship in the famous Black Forest in Germany. (Black Forest woodworkers and clock makers were renowned for their precision clocks. Cuckoo clocks have been made in the region since the early eighteenth century and much of their development occurred there. Excessive logging and two World Wars have reduced the population of the Black Forest and its renowned woodworkers to a mere fraction of what once was, making their distinguished skills both scarce and valuable.) Barefoot's education by this truly gifted Artisan has lead to a passion for the superior, and almost forgotten, construction methods of the past. He possesses an affinity for hand tools and traditional joinery that most others in this field no longer know about, let alone use. He has also developed a love and comprehensive knowledge of hidden catches and secret compartments. In an industry bombarded with new machinery designed for shortcuts, he is pursuing the Master Woodworker level via traditional methods.
