Fused Glass Entryway Light Fixture - Kailua Crotons
This commission was for a series of 28 fused glass panels that were installed into two custom built wooden light boxes inspired by the Arts and Crafts era chandeliers of Greene and Greene. Each was lit with a series of LED flat panels. The landscaping in front of the house features the brilliant red, green, amber and orange hues of crotons. These were the inspiration for the design which wraps around and under each of the two lights. The two chandeliers create a vibrant splash of color as one approaches the front entryway. The panels combine areas of raked glass with areas of single color glass. I kiln carved shapes based upon the croton leaves in the back of each panel for an added textural element.

After meeting with us initially to better understand what we had in mind for the transom window, she prepared several artist drawings with suggested themes. Every one was a possibility that we could have been pleased with. With her talent it made it difficult to decide. We settled on one, then changed to another, and finally after incorporating elements from more than one, and with further changes and additions we finally settled on what has become a work of art in the 6' wide arched transom window above our 8' front doors. It incorporates elements of the family's heritage with a truly wonderful rondel at it's center.
