Pottery Breakfast Set In The Form Of A House

$100

This six piece breakfast set is inspired by the form of an English semi-detached house. The roof can be flipped over to serve as a small serving bowl. The body of the house is built from four rectangular mugs and the base serves as a small tray. The perfect size for serving a fruit salad and scones, it is definitely a conversation piece over a brunch. The set is embellished with windows and doors from four architectural periods. The outside surfaces are stained with an iron oxide wash to bring out the textural detail. The inside of each piece is glazed in a food-safe denim blue.

I create thrown and slab-built stoneware that is grounded on my formal training in Architectural Engineering. Elements of buildings and the materials used to create them continue to fascinate me. My interest in this is continually renewed as I explore the ways in which clay can imitate some of these rich, tactile surfaces. Applying the basic principles of engineering to a medium as malleable as clay is a constant challenge and one that has kept my interest for over 12 years.

My most recent work has used drawings and photographs to create intricate images. Several of my pieces draw influence from recent trips to Chicago, Japan, and the Czech Republic. The surface of each piece is embellished with architectural details, images and found hardware, duplicated from plaster press molds. The clay is glazed with commercial glazes and washes to bring out the surface texture.
