This Gothic inspired trestle table has been specifically designed and constructed for Veranda on Highlands in Birmingham, Al Material- Hand selected old growth Cypress makes up the majority of the table. The cypress is from a swap on the South Carolina, North Carolina border. The swap is located in a river basin, where the Wacama River meets the Little Pee Dee River. The accent pieces are made from hand selected American Walnut. Design- One of the most important design elements seen throughout the Veranda is the reclaimed Gothic stained glass windows. These windows are an important part of architectural history and the history of the Veranda. In order to make these elements a tangible experience, they have been incorporated into the design of the table. The feet have the profile of a trefoil, the main portion of the legs have a simple pointed gothic arch, the simple pointed gothic arch is framed on both sides by half of a gothic ogee arch. All of the above mentioned elements are staples to Gothic architecture. The proportions of the table were developed by utilizing similar proportions that were used in the Gothic cathedrals. Methods Applied- The natural beauty of the Cypress can best be seen in the table top. It is made up of three bookmatched boards. This means the boards are cut from the same tree in sequential order; this enables the appearance of a mirror image from one board to the other. The legs are also bookmatched. The rest of the table is constructed with wood to wood connections, such as mortise and tenon joinery.
