A chair that grew from poplar scraps rescued from the trash pile on a luxury home site in Texas. It kicked around for a few years in a basic rough fit form, the carving began as an expression of symbols that are from my heritage and inspirations. The "stacked arm" came from the "damn it " moment when I realized that the original set were uncomfortably low, thus becoming what we in the trade call a "design element". The base color comes from salal berries, and walnut husks. The brighter pigments come from pastel, scraped into a sea shell, and applied dry with a brush. Several coats of oil are then applied with an antique atomizer, then a coat of pigmented paste wax.

Hand made artisan furniture and accessories, architectural elements, and sculptural pieces. I locally source my material, or reclaim it whenever possible. All of my carving is done by hand.
I am located on Anderson Island, WA. and yes it is beautiful. Many of the finishes are made from local barks and berries. And I enjoy incorporating oddments found lying about.

For Sculpture ProjectI can't say enough how happy I am with Joel. I came to Joel with a idea of what I wanted, and he did an amazing job of transforming that idea into a beautiful piece. My project was small, but had a lot of emotional healing connected to it. This was a gift for a friend, to help her heal. He stayed within my budget without sacrificing any quality. I am very very happy with this experience. Joel was professional, timely, respectful, and above all, he did a incredible job. If you need a piece carved, this is your guy!

For small custom sculpture neededThis was my first experience with custom made as well as my first time designing a project, from scratch, with an artist. My requirements were very specific *and* this was a 25th wedding anniversary gift for my husband so it had a lot of personal meaning to both of us. Joel was very patient and helpful with the design process. I considered several makers who responded to my request but settled on Joel because, after reviewing his portfolio, I thought he was the best choice to make my 'vision' manifest. I was right:). He put tremendous thought and care into the piece. He was very open to my feedback as we 'tweaked' the project to its wonderful completion. A family health issue impacted the timing, hence the four stars, but it was worth it to me to have the project really represent my husband's 'story' so getting it after the deadline wasn't important to me. Joel was very professional in how he handled the issue and I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again. Really a bit of poetry carved out of a block of wood. Joel added some extra, personal and poignant touches that made the piece entirely unique to my husband and me. We will treasure it always. Thanks, again, for your hard work, talent and dedication to your craft. I feel fortunate to have found Custom Made and Joel Bagby. Lisa
