WOW…it's made out of razor blades!!! A typical response from gallery patrons when informed the unique work of art they have been staring at for several minutes, is indeed, made completely out of razor blades. Described as "one of the most dangerous artists in America", he painstakingly HAND CUTS, grinds, shapes, oxidizes, and paints individual razor blades and then adheres them to large masonite panels. The blades form overlapping patterns and textures that, when viewed as a whole, are not immediately recognizable as individual blades, but complex images. That is the true essence of every piece of Ed Bennett original razor blade art. Having pioneered this unique medium over 25 years ago, his recent works have evolved from his signature Americana-themed abstracts to more complex portraiture and lifestyle / wildlife scenes. The featured work here is a tranquil scene titled "Twilight Flight". It depicts the flight of an American bald eagle over a peaceful lake. The dappled light from the moon reflects across the gentle waves of the water with a majestic, snow covered mountain serving as the backdrop. The dramatic lighting in this piece is highlighted by his use use of aluminum backers from the razor blades to form the mountains. The backers (along with a hand-cut aluminum disk for the moon) reflects direct lighting from a room or ceiling, giving the piece it's dramatic glow. The reclaimed wood frame was handcrafted by an 83 year old Amish man from Lancaster county. It is constructed of German lap board from an old homestead. It maintains its' natural patina and distress from decades of use. It compliments the piece wonderfully and will be the star of any room. Whether perched on a mantle in your rustic lodge or cabin, or hung on a wall in any style great room, this painting will definitely be the central focal point. This work required over 80 hours of hand cutting and manipulation to complete. It was created with several thousand razor blades, as well as the use of a new blade called a "prep blade". All blades are permanently sealed under high quality artist's materials. You can run your hand over the surface of any of the works without fear of cuts or scratches.
