The Madison: Dining Table & Chairs

$15,000

This is a set of dining table and 6 chairs. The size of the table is 42 in x 72 in x 30 in. high. I used walnut and a large live-edge slab of spalted, highly figured maple. Because of the rarity of the wood, this is a one of a kind table which is available for purchase now. If you like this style but want a different size table, or a different wood, we can work together to make exactly what you want. Two of the chairs have arms, the rest do not. There's a story behind this dining set: Although I have a very good idea of what the wood I am using will look like finished, it is still somewhat of a surprise when I actually put the first coat of finish on and the beautiful grain reveals itself. I saw a large rather shallow river with beautiful ripples and color. When describing this to my neighbor—an avid fisherman—he reminded me that this describes the Madison River here in Montana. A further connection came when I remembered that my father had built a cabin on the Madison just outside the Park in West Yellowstone many years ago. It still stands. Too bad it is not still in the family! Working with wood—especially live edge slabs—is a process. For me it is a process of letting the wood speak to me when I first see it, interacting with it all through the construction, and still listening and delighting when it reveals itself completely during the finishing. This set is available for purchase or I would be very happy to make you a similar set of a different wood, different size, different number of chairs -- or just the table or just chairs. I look forward to discussing your project with you.

I have been working professionally with wood for over 30 years. A native of Montana, I have always had an interest in art and wood working. I majored in philosophy and fine art at university, started a family, worked for the railroad as a carpenter for many years then opened my shop, Timothy's Fine Woodworking in 1982.

I am especially interested in expressing movement in my furniture, as well as exploring the natural elements of the wood. Early on I was influenced by the work of Tage Frid, George Nakashima and Sam Maloof. I often incorporate the live edge of the boards into my tables, and use the natural grain and color of different woods in my designs.

In addition to studio furniture, I also make custom cabinets and other custom furniture. I enjoy working with my customers, listening to what they want, and giving my attention to every detail, from the selection of the wood to the finished design. I try to honor the spirit of the material I use, in the finished pieces.

"I hope my art that people use everyday helps them reconnect to the spirit of the natural world."
