This handmade queen bed is crafted solely from reclaimed antique wood found only in New Orleans. In making this bed I wanted to preserve the history and beauty of these old pieces. On the side rails and posts, I've embraced the termite holes, accentuated the cracks, and left any old nails still in the wood. The headboard and footboard are made from two cypress doors salvaged from a flooded home in the 7th Ward neighborhood of New Orleans. Most of this area took on nearly 5-7 feet of water and the home these doors were in remained submerged for almost two weeks. They've been dried, refinished, sanded and polished, but still have a distressed look that only Hurricane Katrina could do. The panels of the headboard have been inlaid with a decorative Victorian ceiling tin pressed in Laredo, Texas during the 1920s. The blue and gold tones of these tins pair beautifully with the dark rich colors of the wood. The other pieces of wood are pine and were removed from other historic homes destroyed during Katrina. Each bed is custom made to order. I will work with you to determine the appropriate size, color, and pattern of each piece. I also carry a variety of different tin patterns. All beds require assembly and come with the hardware needed. Interested? Feel free to message me with any questions! Shipping is calculated and based upon your shipping zip code. My Name is Alex
I'm a South Louisiana native from a family whose roots stretch throughout the Gulf Coast. I now live in New Orleans, a city like none other. Since Hurricane Katrina, I have grown to appreciate more than ever its history, charm and beauty. Happily, I can share my passion for this place in the form of my furniture, made of salvaged and recycled wood from New Orleans and the region. My goal and mission: create uniquely designed, one-of-a-kind pieces fashioned from rare materials stamped with beautiful patina that only time can create.
I hand pick each and every piece I use. Majority of the doors I use experienced some sort of water or other damage from Katrina. I clean, strip, sand a re-buff the wood. I stain them a natural color which brings out their scarring and antiqued finish. I then find pieces of decorated tin, patterned metal used to decorate local ceilings in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. I carefully cut, size and place them within the panels of the restored doors. The end result are beautifully reclaimed wooden headboards, tables and other pieces that carry the scars of their existence, but also the beauty and story from another time.
