Chair For The Elderly
A short story about the chair: an 88 years old lady's son commissioned the chair from me for his mom who is is very weak in her legs and getting in and out of a common chair is very difficult for her, so seat height was critical, she is in her chair all day, so a well ventilated woven seat was needed to prevent sweating and sores, she falls asleep in her chair so the arms needed to be high enough so that she won't fall out sideways, it needed to be very light weight so I used pine, which is a weak wood, so at the joints it needed to be thick and strong, everywhere else I removed every bit of wood possible, which inadvertently ended up giving the chair a very athletic look, at the joints like thick musculature and away from the joints absolutely as thin as possible without risk of too thin and breaking. Working alone, I state working alone because nearly everything that I design and make are works of art made by me alone and signed by me for 20+ years, Ralph produces furnishings and signs rebelling against "mechanical mediocrity" refusing to work within the limitations imposed by machines and produce objets d'art which can only be accomplished with many hours/days/weeks/months of hand tooling.
To summarize, I am an artisan, not merely a furniture maker. Thank you for your interest in my fascination.
