Bentwood Workshop Stool

$1,500

I built this 25" modernist high stool for my workshop. The seat is black cherry, the bracing is red oak, the legs are white ash, the footrest is bubinga with wedged rosewood pegs. It is very stable yet very lightweight -- less than 7 lbs. The hand-carved bicycle-style seat is very comfortable and low-stress. After making this one I made some changes to the design for the future: Made the leg taper less extreme, switched to hickory for the bent braces, and switched from a very light varnish-style finish to oil. You can see the updated model in my portfolio under 'Bentwood Stool'. The price range is driven by choice of wood. The low end of the range includes common domestic species like cherry, ash, oak, and hickory. Please contact us to discuss variations and customizations.

I've been designing and making modernist studio furniture for over 35 years. I love solving the problems and addressing the challenges of creating beautiful, affordable things -- chairs, tables, desks, beds, lighting -- things that make a difference in people's lives.

I try to fuse the old ways with the new, like integrating metal structural elements with sensual hand-shaped wood parts, or studying how 3D printed parts can be combined with wood to enable new possibilities.

I believe furniture made of natural materials like wood, handled with integrity and treated with respect, help create positive spaces in which to live.
