Handmade leather journals weren't something I thought about in design school. Seems a hundred years ago, a time for experimenting and discovery. Not everything got completed. The bright confetti artwork used in this journal was an example of an artist proof that never made it to a ltd edition. But I saved it all those years to discover it works beautifully in this handmade book covered in oil-tanned, dusty rose leather. There remains enough of the proof to complete two more journals, so an edition came in time. The brilliance of couleur never faded and is displayed on both inside covers, hand ripped from that old proof. Another piece is featured in the middle signature. This is likely a journal for the lady looking for that illusive accoutrement to match that proud new ensemble. Or maybe an artist or aspiring poet or young collegian or for no other reason than it's just that damn cool! Have that piece of brass engraved with your mongram -Measures 5 1/2" x 7 1/8" x 1 1/4" -Covered in dusty rose, hand-cut and trimmed, oil-tanned leather -Fold-over design - A detachable 54" soft buff leather strap is secured to spine with burgundy leather loop -Vibrant and original silkscreen artwork is featured on both inside covers -A piece of hand hammered brass is placed on inside fold -Five hand stitched signatures of imported Italian Folio Antique White heavy printmaking paper -A total of (100) writable/recorable pages, hand torn for classic deckle edges -European head bands -And yes of course, I sign them all

As sole proprietor at Studio of Visual Arts, I have been a professional illustrator and printmaker for 35 years. My illustrative work is represented in five Louisiana State Museums, countless corporate collections and has received numerous prestigious grants. NewSouthBooks was born as a natural extension of that same artisanship. I am now producing and marketing handmade, leather bound journals of quality and distinction, each journal a unique presentation with original artwork as adornment. All leather, new or old, is hand-cut and trimmed. I use only the highest quality fine art/printmaking paper (250w), hand stitching each signature. My leather journals are truly bound books using traditional book binding materials. Adding to the distinction is the incorporation of original artwork to inside covers and often, the middle signature. On this site, you'll see many examples of work previously completed for clientele. What a fabulous creative and collaborative experience! Michael crafted such an exquisite and important book for us. The newlyweds receiving it will be overjoyed to have something so special. Michael was easy to work with, and patient with our decisions. His thoughtfulness, honesty, and eagerness to please made our project run smoothly. He delivered what he said he would deliver. We are extremely happy with the product, craftsmanship, and care that went into the book.
Michael does beautiful work. The journal is gorgeous.
The maker was great to work with, easy to communicate with and made sure our book arrived within our timeframe. A little high on the price, but the quality was much higher than standard books in a store. A definite memory made with this purchase.
There are not enough written (or spoken) words to describe Michael & his art. He is a true gentleman and his books are beyond "Art". I now have several of Michael's books and they are, well, 'perfect'; period. Thank you Michael - very much.
Michael breathed new life into my husband’s late grandmother’s Bible. This precious keepsake, which was worn from many years of diligent use, can now be something we pass down ourselves thanks to Michael’s skillful hands. Michael kept me updated throughout the process, from receipt of the Bible to delivery, and he was careful to preserve all of the personal notes and scribbles. My husband and I are both thrilled with the end product!
