Sustainable, functional beauty. As an environmental educator I enjoy connecting people with the wonders of our natural world. I have a tremendous amount of interest in the trees that shape our forests- from their ability to sustain our ecosystems to their uniqueness and beauty. Stonefly Woodcrafts uses sustainably harvested and reclaimed hardwoods from here in the mountains of Western North Carolina. A wide variety of native hardwoods is available, chosen for their distinctive physical characteristics, color and grain pattern. Commonly selected species include sugar maple (Acer scaccharum), wild black cherry (Prunus serotina), black walnut (Juglans nigra), ash (Fraxinus sp.), black locust (robinia pseudoacacia) and white oak (Quercus alba). End grain boards are available in custom sizes to fit your needs, with a maximum of 12 inches wide and 24 inches long. All are 1.5 inches thick unless specified by the buyer. Cost is dependent upon size, and based upon $0.55 per square inch (for instance, a 10x12 inch board is priced at $66.00). This board will serve you well for everyday use, and the exposed end grain offers an exceptional cutting surface. This is because knife blades cut between rather than across the hardwood fibers. Each has been treated with a beeswax, mineral oil mixture.

I am a professional environmental educator and naturalist in Western North Carolina who enjoys using locally harvested and reclaimed hardwoods in designing and building functional woodwork.

I have a strong interest in creating works that highlight the biodiversity and character of the Southern Appalachians. If that appeals you you, let me know!

The wood I use in all projects is sustainably harvested and in most cases locally sourced. I do not use any exotic hardwoods, as these are often not harvested sustainably and create a large environmental impact by shipping them to the United States. All wood glue is food-safe when cured and waterproof. Finishes are all non-toxic.

    Ordered a cutting board from Stonefly - had a certain aesthetic that i was aiming for - sort of a slightly rustic yet substantial look/feel. Finished product was beautiful and exceeded my expectations - the darker and lighter color striations give the board a very unique and non-commercial feel. Board was also delivered in a timely fashion and would definitely look to buy more from Stonefly in the future.

    Jonathon was a pleasure to work with. My only negative is that I didn't communicate as well as I should. The coat rack that he sent is beautiful and well made, just not exactly what I had pictured. I am happy with it though! He did install flush mount wall attachments to the rack, but did not send the wall attachments, which may have just been an oversight, and I will contact him directly about this. I was thrilled to be his first customer on Custom Made, and will definitely contact him again with future projects. The coat rack arrived on time (before Christmas) and was well packaged.
