Red Maple Leaf Cutting Board

Sustainable, functional beauty. As an environmental educator I enjoy connecting people with the wonders of our natural world. I have a tremendous amount of interest in the trees that shape our forests- from their ability to sustain our ecosystems to their uniqueness and beauty. These boards are crafted using a single plank of red maple (Acer rubrum) from here in the Southern Appalachians. They are shaped as a botanically correct representation of red maple leaves that adorn our native hardwood forests. Maple trees have long been prized for their natural beauty as well as their durable, tightly grained wood. This board will serve you well as a serving platter or for moderate use as a cutting board. It has been treated with a beeswax, mineral oil mixture. Measures 12x12" at the widest points. What is a stonefly? These small aquatic insects are found in only the cleanest of streams. In this way what may otherwise be seen a simple insect serves as an indicator of environmental quality. It is my intention that my woodworks serve as a means of connecting everyday items to the ecology and beauty of our natural areas.

I am a professional environmental educator and naturalist in Western North Carolina who enjoys using locally harvested and reclaimed hardwoods in designing and building functional woodwork.

I have a strong interest in creating works that highlight the biodiversity and character of the Southern Appalachians. If that appeals you you, let me know!

The wood I use in all projects is sustainably harvested and in most cases locally sourced. I do not use any exotic hardwoods, as these are often not harvested sustainably and create a large environmental impact by shipping them to the United States. All wood glue is food-safe when cured and waterproof. Finishes are all non-toxic.
