THE ROMANCE OF HANDCRAFTED LACE

For centuries, handmade lace was one of the most precious parts of a bride's wedding day look. Gowns, veils, and other pieces of the bridal trousseau were adorned with lace that required days, or even months, of meticulous craftsmanship to create. Edera updates this tradition for the modern bride, with a collection of romantic jewelry and accessories that showcases intricate lace motifs. Designer Ivy Long handcrafts the collection in her Vermont, USA studio using old-world lacemaking and needlework techniques and heirloom-quality materials.

COUTURE LACEMAKING TECHNIQUES

Each design starts with one of designer Ivy Long's original lace patterns and spools of the finest silk, real metal, or metallic foil threads. Ivy weaves the intricate lace motifs with a small crochet hook, then embroiders the lace with a mix of vintage crystals and glass beads, freshwater pearls, and Swarovski crystals.

HEIRLOOM-QUALITY MATERIALS

The lace is created with either pure silk, real metal, or metallic foil threads. Real metal threads are wrapped in a fine metal sheet containing amounts of gold or silver, and are nearly identical to those used in the rich embroidery and laces of the Renaissance and Rococo eras. The metallic foil threads are used in traditional Japanese embroidery and contain .999 silver and 18k gold in the foil. All designs are finished with sterling silver or 14k gold-filled findings.
