Wood Wallet
This beautifully crafted wood wallet is made from Western Maple, Purple Heart and African Blackwood. I have been making wallets from wood for years now and when I first began making them I took one for myself. At the time I chose a Cherry wallet with Purple Heart Trim. Making these little treasures is like making fudge and not getting to eat any! I am always wanting one as I love each one for different reasons. A while ago, I decided that I would make one for myself. This wallet is one of my conscious attempts to do so. But I just couldn't take it home. It is too nice! Someone who loves beautifully crafted wood things is just going to love using this! I have made about 5 wallets "for myself". Laughing at myself I finally have forced myself to take one. It is Figured Walnut with Pin Oak trim. :) My wallets were intended to carry business cards with credit cards. I got tired of mine getting damaged from the wrong sized container. You can hold up to about 7 or 8 credit cards, a couple business cards and some cash if you want. People love these. I finish each one as if it is a piece of furniture. I have been living in the Pacific Northwest since 1991 and currently work in Portland, Oregon. Portland is a fast growing hub of creative energy and inspired Makers. I am one. For me, it has always been about line, shape, function and lets not forget . . . wood. I am awed by it's unique nature and delighted that I get the opportunity to work with it everyday. Each board and every species has it's own unique characteristics. A wild example is the Huon Pine from Tasmania. It is the oldest living tree on the planet at 10, 500 years. They start to reproduce 600 to 800 years of age. That helps put some perspective in the realm of us and them!
The intention behind my work is to highlight the qualities of each piece of wood I handle, to give it a new life, and to help us appreciate and see it for what it is. I am often given the great pleasure to make gifts for anniversaries, birthdays, holidays and just something sweet. What a special honor it is to be the maker of a gift! I get the sweet view of seeing a person love another. Isn't that what it's all about?
My background in both fine art and the construction industry has given me an unusual approach to woodworking and furniture making. I am an artist who makes usable, beautiful objects with wood that I hope will say something about us.
I have a BFA from Cooper Union in NYC, NY and was a contractor for over 15 years designing and remodeling homes in New York City, Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Eugene, Oregon. While studying fine art and learning how to carve wood I also studied woodworking and cabinetry. Later I worked for a couple of architectural woodworking shops in Oregon where I learned in a commercial environment making one off custom work.
I make furniture, woodwork , sculpture, laptop stands, specialty boxes, jewelry and probably something else by the time you read this. I love to design and build my own work as well as contract commissions for clients. My passion lies in discovery and invention and the challenge to make something useful in the most beautiful way possible.

For Laptop Stand5.0I was looking for a gift for a member of our physician group who is retiring. Besides surgery, we shared an appreciation for computers. I scoured the internet for a classy well made laptop stand. Most are very modern in design, which was not what I was looking for. Jacquelyn Smith had a design that was perfect. She made the process very easy and was right on the money as far as total price and time of delivery. Most of the gifts for this surgeon were something he could have bought himself. I'm not saying there wasn't much thought in the gift, but my gift was the only unique one, and I believe he appreciated that more than any of the other gifts. Had the stand in my lap as I waited my turn to say a few words and present him with the gift. As I waited, it gave me a chance to really "feel" the stand. The design and finish were impeccable.
