Serving Platters

Serving Platters

$90

I started making meditation benches of red cedar I harvest by hand, then realized some of the live edge wood pieces lend themselves to beautiful serving platters (not for cutting on, but for serving crackers, cheese, and appetizers), permanently inlaid with designs made of blue corn, red pepper and other sacred crops I grow. These are really popular as wedding or housewarming gifts, and the recipient will want to keep them out on the kitchen counter or table to beautify a kitchen. I love doing a tree of life design on these, and can also do images such as garlic or vegetables for the inlay that look great in a warm kitchen. My wife makes small pottery bowls that can be included if desired.

I walk in two worlds as an artist and farmer, the forest and the fields. In the forest I cut trees by hand that are no longer living, carry them out, then mill them into boards. I craft these into meditation benches, serving platters, coat racks, stools, chairs, small tables, and altars for table tops or to affix to walls. I work primarily with New England forest materials such as red cedar and mountain laurel, two very special woods that very few people work with, but are perfect for unique pieces. In the field I grow ancient heirloom corn, wheat, peppers and sacred tobacco then harvest and combine these to create inlaid symbols on the pieces. I’ve not seen any other artist work with this combination of materials. I will gladly work with you to create a custom inlaid design that is special to you. Many who purchase my work meditate, or are seeking more tranquility and spirituality in their own lives, or for a special person in their life. Some of my more popular inlay designs include a Mayan Sun, Tree of Life, Lotus, Kokopelli, Hamsa, and Om symbols. Each piece is crafted using traditional hand tools and with non-toxic finishes, and my studio in the woods is fully solar powered. Meditation has brought my life into balance. I am honored to support others with a piece that brings functionality, comfort and beauty, and hope your purchase brings you and your loved ones a lifetime of peace and happiness.

More about my life: In addition to my woodworking as an artist, I am a farmer specializing in salad and cooking greens and garlic, and I work with youth helping them find a meaningful vision for their future. My wife and I founded Seeds of Solidarity Farm as well as Seeds of Solidarity Education Center, a non profit organization that awakens the power of youth, schools, and families to Grow Food Everywhere to transform hunger to health, and create resilient lives and communities. We also co-founded the North Quabbin Garlic and Arts Festival to create a place for other artists and farmers to show and sell their work locally and support rural economic vitality.

I am very happy to work with you to create a beautiful yet functional piece of art; your purchase in turn supports our life of art, farming, and service and I am grateful.
