The top of this table was made with quarter-sawn Red Oak, giving it an interesting grain finish. It was designed for this space because of a door that swings out into the dining space. Because the legs are toward the center of the table, guests can sit at any place around the table. The chairs around the table were designed for this table, though it can be purchased separately.
Heymans Design
I design and make furniture that I like, and would want in my home. Most of the furniture that I make starts with wood, as I love the look and feel of serious wood, which is why most of my pieces have a clear finish on them.
Two major influences are the prairie style of architecture that I grew up with in my parents home, but also the Bauhaus architecture of my alma mater in Central Minnesota. I spent too many hours sitting in Marcel Breuer chairs, in a Marcel Breuer-designed library, pondering the design rather than writing that Brittish Lit. paper.
Central Minnesota is a good place for one who loves modern; it is also a very good place for someone who loves wood. I have a handful of sawyers within a 45-minute drive from whom I buy my wood--mostly Red Oak, White Oak, Walnut, and Cherry.
