The Cube: A Minimalist Console Cabinet For Bar, Tv, Sound System, Etc..

This console cabinet is simple and restrained. There is nothing left to take away; no outward-appearing hinges or clunky door handles to draw your eye away from the beauty of the quarter-sawn Cherry doors and Oak cabinet. The cabinet case is perched slightly above its base to make it appear light, while the interlocking fingers which join its top and sides together draw people to closely inspect the craftsmanship and run their hands over the glass-smooth wood finished by repeated applications of hand-rubbed Tung oil. I use only traditional hand-cut wood-to-wood joints, which allows each piece of wood in the furniture to move in concert with every other during seasonal changes of moisture content, thus lasting for generations. Each piece of wood is selected and harvested by me on my family wood-lot in Maine, and then sawn at a small mill several miles down the road. Because each piece is custom, if you have a unique request for either dimensions or appearance, I would be happy to discuss that with you. Each pair of doors is bifurcated, hinged first to themselves, and then to the cabinet, which allows them to fold onto each other, and then out and away from the cabinet, taking up a minimum of space. The interior can be custom arranged to house a wide-screen TV, or feature shelves, allowing it to be used as a bar, desk, sideboard, library, audio center, or anything else you can think of. The console can be made out of a variety of woods, such as Ash, Birch, Oak and Cherry, though a combination of two, such as the one pictured, has usually given the best results.
