Modern Live Edge Walnut Coffee Table- Natural Dark Wood- Black Steel Legs- X Style Bases
This modern live edge walnut coffee table is truly a work of art! The large coffee table was created by jointing two book-matched sections of black walnut slabs, both with an intense amount of figuring. The unusual streaks of reverse grains seen on each side of the table top are commonly called dragon tails or starbursts. These figuring features were created by stresses to the growing tree and have created the black and golden streaks (resembling tortoiseshell) displayed on each side of the tabletop. They're incredibly flashy, yet organic gifts from nature. The drying checks (natural cracks) have been filled with a tinted resin and fitted with 5 hand carved maple inlays (aka bowties or keys). I chose to use the maple to compliment the creamy sapwood found along the edges of the walnut. The black walnut has been kiln dried, planed flat, sanded smooth and finished in an oil and satin poly mixture. It is therefore moisture and scratch resistant, with a film finish commonly used on dining tables. In layman terms, it's tough and won't cower to sweaty drinks, hot plates or horseplay. The top has been fitted to two steel bases fabricated in an X-style design. The bases have been painted black and clearcoated, plus felt pads have been adhered to the bottom of each leg. Measures: 40" - 44 1/2" L x 22 3/8" W x 18" H. The top itself is a solid 2" thick.

Kentucky LiveEdge is operated by craftsman Drew Gahafer. He creates quality live edge furniture and unique applications for home and office.
Drew Gahafer is a self-taught woodworker, artist and furniture designer that got his start by upcycling furniture that was either thrown away, neglected, or purchased for mere pennies at yard sales or consignment shops. Plastics, glass, metals and wood were all materials that he was intrigued on refurbishing and building with. In 2008 he built his family home, which was a narrow shotgun style house. After weeks of housing the traditional square coffee table, he realized the dimensions took up 1/3 of the rooms space. In an effort to create something customized for his home space, he traveled back to his roots and brought back 2 narrow live edge slabs from a sawmill in Eastern Kentucky. By the time his first two pieces were near completion, his family and friends made offers on both pieces. He obliged and returned to the mountains for 5 live edge slabs of wood. Once those 5 were near completion, same story. To this day, his home lacks a coffee table.
