I began sewing and drawing at an early age. In fact It could be said my calling as an artist began to manifest itself in grade school. My study hall periods were spent creating drawings of famous people of the day. I would then trade these drawings for goodies from my classmates.
I began sewing as a child also, making clothing for both my paper dolls and real dolls. By the time I reached eighth grade I was creating garments for my friends to ware in talent shows.
In fact I managed to make a six week sewing project, administration by my economic teacher, who paraded and praised the dress up and down the hall, but graded me a "D"for completing the project over night, opposed to six weeks. This made me more determine to pursue my passion as an artist/ designer.
In 1974 I enrolled in (LATT) Los Angeles Trade Technical college for courses in fashion design.
My first year there I won second place in the Gold Thimble sewing contest"children wear" and was offered a job to teach basic sewing durning the school summer break.
I kept up my seamstress skills by making customize clothing for clients in my home and for local Boutiques.
In the late 90's I invented a patent pending product called "the Vest Pack". witch was later featured in (WWD)"Women Wear Daily". My Hip Hop designs was featured In National magazine such as "Upscale" that soon caught the eye of (ABC) Warner Brothers . who inform me that Mark Curry the star of the sitcom called "Hanging with Mr. Cooper", wanted permission to have my Hip Hop designs worn on his show.
However, returning to the muse of my youth, I began oil painting.
My impression of family and friends serves as a both my palate and inspiration for a series of African-American Folk Art depicting the full spectrum of Human emotion, with a bold use of color.
My paintings has been featured in various galleries and Museum.
2002 "WoodWind & BrassWind" was pleased to present two signed and numbered limited edition prints of my pantings, "Mr.Jakes"and "Music Makers"featured in their fine arts catalog "Gift of Notes."
