My career in building began with theatrical carpentry and design. I worked for four years in the Scene Shop at Colorado College, helping to build and create anything necessary for a wide range of performances. From very detailed intimate sets to large overwhelming sets that took up the entire theatre. This job taught me a lot of general construction basics as well as some invaluable design experience. I still like to see much of what I build now through the lens of theatrical design.
After graduating with a degree in theatre from Colorado College I wanted to learn some of the finer side of woodworking. I was lucky enough to find an entry level job at Childspace LLC, in Colorado Springs, a company focusing on making high end children's furniture, toys, and scientific learning devices. I took the opportunity working there to learn everything I could about fine woodworking, joinery, finishing, use of almost any imaginable power and hand tool.
What I have learned most from both of these jobs, outside of the physical skills of construction is an ability design playfully and thoughtfully. Whether it is for an audience or a child, I believe we crave forms that are personable, that we can interact with, that tell a story (or really that add to a story that's already being told).
