Forged Steel Bookshelf Made With Sustainably Reclaimed Wood

$900

This handmade bookshelf, made from a reclaimed Asiatic hardwood known as fishtail oak, coupled with hand-forged steel elements--will be a beautiful addition to your home. Fishtail oak is a stunning wood that blends shades of chocolate, honey, rose, cinnamon, burgundy and copper, in a breathtaking pattern not unlike the scales of a fish. Each board contains subtle variations that give every piece a unique look. This wood came a long way before arriving in the industrial section of NW Portland, where grayed and weathered shipping dunnage made of the material sit, waiting to be transformed into your custom piece. If you love the piece, but prefer a different finish, it can also be built in oak, pine, cedar, walnut, tigerwood and more, and at the dimensions of your choosing. Made by hand in Portland, Oregon Dimensions: custom made to order, price varies based on size

Upon exploring Portland's industrial pockets and commercial shipping areas, I came across a unique material called fishtail oak, a dense and heavy hardwood sustainably grown in parts of Australia and Asia, weathered from years of being at sea. The lengths are mottled gray and twisted from the rugged history it attained from ships it once benefited, but once dried out and properly milled, the magic of this wood can be truly appreciated. It has exquisite graining with color blends of chocolate, honey, rose, cinnamon, with tinges of burgundy and iridescent copper flecks.

I've worked as a carpenter for many years and have used all types of material, but after I finished my first table with fishtail oak, the beauty and durability of this wood was undeniable.

My curiosity and desire to work with this rare material produces furniture that I hope will be a timeless piece for your place of business, home, or loved one.
