Toy Chest / Hope Chest

$900

This was originally designed as a toy chest for my grandchildren. It features a live edge spalted maple top with some truly spectacular grain. What was part of a limb now functions as a handle. It was made with variable space dovetails to give it a bit of character. The hinges are similar to what's used on a laptop computer. This makes it safe for children as it will stay open in any position. In this case we chose not to put feet on the piece. The reason being is that by having the carcass sit on the ground, toys and other objects could not get underneath. It also gives the piece a good deal of stability. The bottom is actually plywood with the understanding that in the case of a toy chest, it's likely to get a fair amount of use and abuse. Note the mitered corners and the attention to detail. This particular case is made out of cherry although another one was produced using walnut. The exact same design could be used as a hope chest. All that will be necessary is to make it a bit longer. If desired, the interior could be lined with cedar. Incidentally the underside of the top has the same type of grain.

This Maker has consistently demonstrated excellence in craftsmanship and customer service.

For nearly 30 years we have been making fine custom furniture. All of our creations are one-of-a-kind pieces using individually hand selected, local hardwoods.

At Lehigh Valley wood works we believe in creating classic furniture with a unique blend of both new and old techniques. The focus is on a blend of both form and function. For example, we use ball bearing slides rather than a web frame for drawers. The reason is it simply works better and will be more functional and durable.

We also use a combination of both hand tools and machinery. Again the best available tool for the job.

Since we focus on one-of-a-kind pieces each order will be discussed in detail to assure that all of our clients receive the very best products.

The pieces shown in our pictures are examples of some of the work we have done over the years. Keep in mind that a particular live edge piece is unique. Clients can choose from the type of wood squared edges or live edges etc. just let us know what your preferences are and we will accommodate them accordingly.
