Wooden Carved 18th Century Map Of French Detroit... In French!

Wooden Carved 18th Century Map Of French Detroit... In French!

$110+

Celebrate the 313 with this glimpse of Detroit during the time of the area's settlement by the French. This is handcrafted in Detroit, and a one-of-a-kind original! This piece is based on a map circa 1700 so the French words you see printed may not be spelled correctly according to French grammar and spelling today, but it is exactly as the original print. This is a very old map and spelling/grammar has since changed. The map itself is maple, with a hardwood frame of either maple or oak, with options of leaving it natural or stain. Overall Dimensions: 16"x12".

When I'm not in the shop creating things for business or pleasure, I have found that I draw inspiration from nature. As a Michigan native, that means I'm usually exploring the Great Lakes by land or by sea, whether enjoying an offroad trail in my jeep, or sailing my handmade 17 foot sailing dory, or even scuba diving one of the many shipwrecks.

Like my hobbies, my work is inspired by simple and clean designs that reference organic structures as a primary source. As contradictory as it may seem to blend the fashion of "simple design" while incorporating natural elements, the result exposes the complimentary features of the two vastly different worlds. My work represents this most notably in the blending of steel and wood as predominant materials.

Having studied history and art history, along with being slightly obsessed with older times, my work tends to reference traditional items and processes. Whether from "just being born with it," (as I like to think) or years of visual training with my art history degree, my work tends to be uniquely my own. The style of my work tends to be dynamic in that many pieces of mine can find themselves comfortably at home in a loft in the city or next to a wood stove in a cabin in the middle of the mountains.
