"The Mountaineer" White Oak Dining Table

$3,750

"The Mountaineer" is a stunning representation quartersawn American white oak. The ribbons of contrasting color that dance their way through the table top, also known as ray fleck, are a wood characteristic that is most pronounced in the oaks of North America. Consequently, you will find that quartersawn oak is a feature in many of the most classic American furnishings of our past and present day. This ray fleck phenomenon in our oaks occurs when the medullary rays that naturally run throughout the tree (from the center pith outward) are sliced parallel to reveal their cross sections. These medullary rays exist in all trees, but are best seen in American oaks. As furniture makers and sawyers, we can ensure this phenomenon exists in our lumber simply by sawing a log in a quarterly manner at the sawmill. Hence the name quartersawn. Also shown in this table are some hunkin' finger joints that were hand cut to join the beefy 4" x 4" legs to the table top. This joinery makes the table all one piece of solid American vegetation that denies any questions of stability. The table was set roomy for four guests, but you could easily squeeze in up to eight, especially using the ends. Each piece is finished with a protective oil and hardwax blend for a beautiful and warm matte finish. Finish will not water-spot. My name is Nicholas Cramer
I started Big Tooth Co. in Indianapolis, December 2015. It was inspired by the realization that my passion to create and build was almost entirely missing in my adult life. I left the corporate 9-5 job scene and dove head first into self-employment…and I wish I would have done it sooner!

At the core of my custom woodworking and furniture design is the desire to create something useful that endures the test of time. Every piece is built with the highest quality materials, traditional woodworking techniques, and joinery that I guarantee will last generations. I'm always experimenting, learning, and exploring new styles - so if you do not see what you are looking for in my portfolio, I'd love to create whatever it is you're envisioning.

Woodworking starts with a living and breathing tree. In an effort to honor the material and give life back to the earth, I plant and rescue saplings to replace every tree I use or table I build.

Each furniture design, by nature (literally), is truly unique, and I am fascinated by the stories that live edge wood and wood grain share. While I put hours of work into each piece, the trees are the true heroes. They grew tall and strong over the course of 60+ years, which is some hardcore dedication. I believe in paying that dedication forward by planting and growing my own trees. Trees should be celebrated!

My seed and sapling stock mostly consists of hardwood species native to Indiana. Giant sequoias may also be available. If you are interested in planting one or several of these trees with a purchase of your table, that can easily be arranged - they are my gift to you!
