"Milk & Honey" is quite a showcase of beautiful, good ole' American white oak. Since there are hundreds of oak species, with half of them white, the color spectrum and unique figuring of the wood can be rather diverse. This piece makes no exception to that diversity, with half a dozen colors and some wild figuring in the legs. Not only was the wood white oak, but this piece was finished off with Rubio Monocoat's pigmented oil color "White." Which is what inspired the pieces name. White pigment soaked into the grain of the wood giving an interesting mixture of white and honey coloring. My first table with pigmented oil, and I definitely plan to incorporate color like this more in the future. Check out the hand cut mortise and tenon joinery in the legs which make for an incredibly strong construction that will last lifetimes. This piece also marks the first to be photographed in new new studio space which I moved to in the East State Village of Fort Wayne, IN during January 2020. The wall of windows in the front of the studio make taking photos here…well, quite easy! The table roomy for four guests in these photos, but you could easily squeeze in up to seven or eight. Each piece is finished with a protective oil and hardwax blend for a beautiful and warm matte finish. Finish will not water-spot. My name is Nicholas Cramer
I started Big Tooth Co. in Indianapolis, December 2015. It was inspired by the realization that my passion to create and build was almost entirely missing in my adult life. I left the corporate 9-5 job scene and dove head first into self-employment…and I wish I would have done it sooner!
At the core of my custom woodworking and furniture design is the desire to create something useful that endures the test of time. Every piece is built with the highest quality materials, traditional woodworking techniques, and joinery that I guarantee will last generations. I'm always experimenting, learning, and exploring new styles - so if you do not see what you are looking for in my portfolio, I'd love to create whatever it is you're envisioning.
Woodworking starts with a living and breathing tree. In an effort to honor the material and give life back to the earth, I plant and rescue saplings to replace every tree I use or table I build.
Each furniture design, by nature (literally), is truly unique, and I am fascinated by the stories that live edge wood and wood grain share. While I put hours of work into each piece, the trees are the true heroes. They grew tall and strong over the course of 60+ years, which is some hardcore dedication. I believe in paying that dedication forward by planting and growing my own trees. Trees should be celebrated!
My seed and sapling stock mostly consists of hardwood species native to Indiana. Giant sequoias may also be available. If you are interested in planting one or several of these trees with a purchase of your table, that can easily be arranged - they are my gift to you!
