Alan is back in his woodworking shop creating new furniture pieces and accessories, filling custom orders, and maintaining his interior design practice.
Alan began his design career working in professional theater in New York, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco. He established AMWW (Alan Melad Woodworking) in 1968. In 1984 AMDA (Alan Melad Design Associates) was established as a full-service interior design practice. Alan has taught at New Hampshire Institute of Art (NHIA), Wentworth Institute of Technology (WIT) and the Boston Architectural College (BAC).
In 1991, Alan won a commission from the NH Arts Council and created a site-specific sculpture at Odiorne State Park Visitor Center, Rye, NH.
I am fascinated by materials and form. If an interesting shape can be turned into functional furniture, I will give it a try.Simple geometric shapes realized with rich wood, metal, and stone are favorites. Traditional joinery, stacking, and new methods are employed.
Discussing woodworking and design with friends and colleagues and my son, who is also a furniture maker, is a great pastime.
Classical music and jazz fill the shop with sounds and my two grandsons gluing scraps together to make swords and sculpture fill the days with joy.
