Southern Modern Contemporary Furniture
Made from either reclaimed or sustainably harvested lumber and metal. Designed to last a lifetime.
Hello! I am John, as a boy who always loved to dabble in woodwork. My PawPaw, Dad and Uncle taught me how to build. My childhood and adolescence were spent with tools in hand and loving every minute of it. When I left for Los Angeles at 19 years old, I was excited to start my newly lined up job as an assistant in sound production. Fast forward 9 years and I was a pretty successful editor with a strong career. And even more importantly, in April of 2012, I was a married man and in May of 2013, a father!!
As any new parent can relate, there is nothing like having a baby to help you re-evaluate and re-prioritize your life. After several months of long conversations, my wife Sara and I made some decisions and it was time to make some actions. We left our small home in Santa Monica, seven blocks from the beach and bought a home in Southeast Los Angeles…Compton to be exact…where I had the space needed for a workshop. And four days before my son's 1st birthday, I put in my notice at work.
Leaving behind the beach was sad, but walking away from a good, steady paycheck with health insurance and benefits was terrifying. I will forever be grateful to my wife Sara for being by my side. Well, let's be honest, many times during the first year she was behind me, literally pushing me forward when the frustrations and splinters at times became overwhelming. Sara believed in my passion and together we made a great team and our little business took off. The two of us do everything in house from conception and design to crafting the furniture along with all of the tedious "back-office" work that comes with managing a manufacturing business.
CHAPTER 2!!
In 2016, after outgrowing our California workshop, Sara and I decided to relocate our family and our business down to Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
Mississippi is not only my birthplace where we have family galore, but Ocean Springs is widely known for its stellar arts scene, putting art and small business at the center of its economy. We bought a new home and currently operate out of a workshop that is 3 times the size of our first one! Don’t get me wrong, there was no better place than Compton, CA to start this business. We hope to always carry Compton's tenacious energy with us as we continue to grow SOMCO Furniture.
At the heart of our business remains the core belief that woodworking is an art form, one that we are lucky enough to call our business. We want to assure you that every piece will continue to be handmade, exclusively using reclaimed and sustainable materials.

For L Desk - Walnut Desk- Midcentury Modern- Metal Base
This desk is absolutely beautiful! Pricing, communication, craftsmanship, shipping… all superb. I ended up buying some washers for the wood screws but that’s not a big deal at all. I am very happy! I would definitely recommend buying from this seller.

For L Desk - Walnut Desk- Midcentury Modern- Metal Base
The desks and matching cabinets we received were fabulous. The desks were not made exactly the way we requested with brackets to easily remove their metal legs but they are beautiful and feel sturdy and durable. The brackets joining the main and return sides of the desk should at least have threaded inserts instead of wood screws to allow for ease of disconnection when moving to a new room or residence. With a screw connection, the wood is weakened each time you remove and reinstall the screw. If you have specific details that are important and documented, however, be sure to communicate often to ensure your needs are met. The delivery was delayed and may have contributed to the oversight. Overall, I would recommend this maker for his craftsmanship and the quality of his finished product.
