About Built-In Wall Units
Built-ins here include bookcases and home libraries in cherry, oak, walnut, ash and bamboo; cabinetry around fireplaces and in alcoves; entertainment centers; entry hall built-ins; and radiator covers. Finishes run from natural hardwood to painted and white units, and some units are made in hot-rolled steel.
What sets the price
A listing's price is usually a starting point. Half of the listings here are priced between about $3,300 and $11,400, with a median near $5,350, and one in ten is priced above $17,800. Width and height, wood or paint, the number of doors and drawers, and installation set the price of a commission.
Before you start
- Measure the wall's width at the floor, the middle and the ceiling, and the ceiling height at each end.
- Note the depth you can give up, plus baseboard, crown molding, outlets, switches, vents and windows.
- Photograph the wall straight-on and the room around it.
- List what the unit will hold: books, a TV and its components, display pieces, closed storage.
- Pick a paint color or wood, or send a sample of trim or flooring to match.
For bedroom built-ins such as closet walls and headboard storage, see Wall Units under Bedroom Furniture.
Describe the built-in with the materials, size, budget and date you have in mind, and makers who do this work send proposals. You pay a 50% deposit on the one you approve, see the finished built-in by photos, video call or studio visit, and pay the balance once you approve it; Maker Marketplace holds that payment while it ships.

Frequently asked questions
Measure the wall's width at the floor, the middle and the ceiling, and the ceiling height at each end, since walls and ceilings are often slightly out of square. Note the depth you can give up and the position of baseboards, outlets, switches, vents and windows. Photos of the wall straight-on help the maker plan, and you can ask them to confirm the measurements before building.
Ask each maker. The price you approve on Maker Marketplace covers materials, labor and shipping, and installation depends on the maker and the distance to your home. Ask whether the maker fits the unit on site or ships it in sections for a local carpenter, and who handles fitting it to the wall, painting and touch-ups. Settle this before you approve a proposal.
Yes. Entertainment centers are among the built-ins listed here. Give the maker your TV's size and weight, the components and speakers the unit needs to hold, and where power and cable enter the wall. With those details, the maker can plan the openings, airflow for the electronics and a route for the wires.
Listed prices for built-in wall units on Maker Marketplace have a median of about $5,350, and half of the listings fall between about $3,300 and $11,400. One in ten is priced above $17,800. A listing's price is a starting point; the proposal prices your exact width, height, wood or paint, and fittings, and the price you approve covers materials, labor and shipping.
