Shaving Brushes

$40

These are shaving brushes made to show two domestic woods in the handles. The lighter one is Hard Maple and the darker is Black Walnut. The brush itself is Badger Hair, considered the top source for shaving brushes. These particular knots (what the brush part without the handle is called) are A- Grey grade, 21mm in diameter. The grades run from B, Black, 14mm in diameter to AAAA+ SilverTip, 30mm in diameter and about half again as tall. For this grade they are generally under $50 each, while the top grade SilverTip brushes are priced between $200 and $300. There really is that much difference in the quality of the individual knots, and can be that great a difference in the beauty of the wood chosen. Each handle is individually turned and there is the possibility of adding silver or gold hardware on the base and where the knot is fitted into the handle. These features are part of the conversation that will take place should you want one of these shaving brushes custom made.

I have been making from wood for as long as I can remember. I take a great deal of pride in my work and will not accept a commission if I am not entirely sure I can complete it to your satisfaction. ShopDog Turnery is a one-person, one-dog operation making all sorts of custom items, primarily lathe based. This includes bottle-stoppers, wine glasses (with glass or wooden bowls), platters and plates, bowls, boxes, and whatever else springs to mind.

In addition to lathe work I make various flat pieces; tables, specialty boxes, cutting boards and, again, whatever else springs to mind.

I make for the joy of the making, using sustainably harvested and reclaimed or historical woods exclusively.

Molly was the ShopDog, but is no longer with us. She did all the "RUFF" work in the turnery.

Jim Barbour was an absolute joy to work with! He is extremely knowledgeable, insightful, and is a highly skilled craftsman. He guided me through the wood selection process and explained how my cutting board would be made. He was extremely patient with my many questions. The finished piece is absolutely gorgeous! It is now one of my prized possessions! I will enjoy showing it off to friends! Jim would receive my absolute highest recommendation on any project involving wood.

Jim did an incredible job on this project. He was very responsive to any questions, always available to chat and go over the details of what I was looking for, and ultimately created EXACTLY what I had envisioned for the box.

My fiance-to-be is going to be absolutely stunned when she sees her ring sitting in this thing. Thank you for doing such a great job, Jim! You were so easy to work with and knocked this out of the park!
