Signs For Small Restaurant

$75

I made these three signs gratis for a young man who opened a small Tex-Mex restaurant about a year ago. It's basically a one man operation and he was on a tight budget. I told him I'd make the signs if he would feed me occasionally. He agreed. And his food is wonderful. The first sign is meant to sit by the roadside at the entrance to his place. He also uses it when he caters at local events. I carved the signs on a CNC router, then hand-painted them.I used 1 x 6" and 1 x 8" pine boards, stained with dark walnut. I'm currently modifying the signs by adding a shadow for 3D effect. No picture yet. Use your imagination. The middle sign uses a cabinet door, about 20" x 36". I CNC routed the image and lettering. Mostly my design. If you look close, the serape on the cactus has the Texas state flag embedded in it (a request from the owner's wife; both are Texans of Hispanic origin). The sign hangs on the entry door to the restaurant. I attached a piece of plexiglass to the face to protect it from the weather and vandals. The third sign was a prototype for the middle sign. Just a scrap piece of 1 x 12" pine. The carving was not very good but once painted, the owner liked it and hung on a back wall. It looks OK from a distance. I'd charge about $75 per sign.

About Me

I'm a 70 year old guy, retired in 2007, after 30 years of college teaching. I wanted to a good teacher, certainly better than most of the schmucks who taught me. I did OK but wasn't the "great" teacher I wanted to be. Then health issues forced an early retirement. I had always been interested in woodworking of the carpentry type, which I still do for personal projects. But I also discovered "creative" woodworking of a more artistic kind that I describe below and that's what I've been doing for the past 8 years.

My "Business"

I don't really have a company nor am I really in business. I'm a one-man hobby operation. I just use "The Old Man's Woodshop" on my non-business cards. I do rustic, simple wood projects: walking sticks and canes, small signs (house numbers, welcome, business, etc.), artistic wood carvings (can be hand-painted), small furniture, among other things. I also grow and decorate gourds as bowls, vases, birdhouses, animals, little people, creatures). What I do is not my livelihood and I'm not trying to make a lot of money. Mostly, I just want to make things that will please my customers. So far, so good. People seem pleased with the results of the 5 CustomMade projects I have completed. Similarly, that holds true for other people I done things for, e.g., several small business signs.
