Black Lotus Dice Box Carved Sculpted Wood
The customer wanted a black lotus box to store gaming dice inside of, and stated what size, it ended up having space inside for a 4 x 4 x 4 matrix of gaming dice. From my fascination with growing plants and blossom formations, I noticed long ago that nearly all blossoms with petals, arrange those petals in a spiral helix formation, so, to arrange the petals that i sculpted from limewood, I carved a shallow spiral groove from the bottom to the top and arranged the petals in an overlapping manner largely obscuring the fact that they are spirally arranged. since i like the luminous quality of artist oils, and the intense color saturation, i painted the Lotus Box with artist oils. Also, artist oils have centuries of proven excellence regarding durability, acrylics do not. Also, I do not like the chalky, dull, "lifeless" appearance of acrylics, which name is merely a euphemism for latex paint. So far as I know, this box is unique, it was not a copy of an existing box. Working alone, I state working alone because nearly everything that I design and make are works of art made by me alone and signed by me for 20+ years, Ralph produces furnishings and signs rebelling against "mechanical mediocrity" refusing to work within the limitations imposed by machines and produce objets d'art which can only be accomplished with many hours/days/weeks/months of hand tooling.
To summarize, I am an artisan, not merely a furniture maker. Thank you for your interest in my fascination.
